Jamaican Peanut Porridge

Jamaican Peanut Porridge

Jamaican Peanut Porridge is creamy and delicious with a nutty flavor.

It is another favorite porridge by many Jamaicans that is packed with lots of protein and iron.

Of all the Porridges in Jamaica, the Peanut Porridge is the most popular on the Island.

It is referred to as the ‘street corner food’.

In the early mornings, you can see street vendors with their push carts and a very visible enormous pot on top of it.

People will be buying as much as they can buy and by 9 am in the morning, it’s already done.

How to make Jamaican Peanut Porridge

The 3 main ingredients to make Jamaican Peanut Porridge.

The first thing to do is to add 4 cups of water to a medium pot to boil. Add the salt and cinnamon stick (if using instead of ground cinnamon).

Thirdly, pour the mixture to the boiling water and whisk to prevent any lumps from forming. Cover and let it cook for about 20 minutes, stirring every 7 minutes or so.

Finally, add the vanilla extract, nutmeg, ground cinnamon (only if you didn’t use the cinnamon stick) and the sweetened condensed milk. Stir to sweeten and taste to know if it is to your desire. Serve warm and enjoy.

Jamaican Peanut Porridge Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Raw Peanut soaked in 2 cups of Water
  • 3 Green Bananas, peeled and diced (optional)
  • 1/2 cup Oatmeal
  • 4 cups Water for boiling
  • 1 cup Coconut Milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon Nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon or 1 Cinnamon Stick
  • 2 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • 1 can Sweetened Condensed Milk
  • 1/2 cup (or less) Brown Sugar or Granulated Sugar (optional)

Instructions

  1. Rinse the raw peanuts under running water twice. In a medium bowl, add the peanuts along with 2 cups of water and allow to soak for about an hour.
  2. Pour the 4 cups of water into a medium pot with the salt and allow to boil up. If you are using cinnamon stick, add it to the water to boil also.
  3. Add the soaked raw peanuts and water to a blender and blend until smooth.
  4. Peel, wash and sliced the green bananas into about 1/2 an inch to an 1 inch size. Add them to the blender (the blended peanut) along with the oatmeal and blend until smooth. Just about 1 to 2 minutes or longer.
  5. Pour the blended mixture to the boiling water as you stir with a whisk. Continue to stir to prevent the mixture from forming lumps as it cooks on medium low heat. Cover and let it cook for about 20 minutes, stirring every 7 to 10 minutes to prevent lumps as it thickens while it cooks.
  6. Add the 1 cup of coconut milk and stir. Let it cook for another 10 minutes. Check the consistency, if it is too thick, you can add about 1/2 cup to 1 cup of water or evaporated milk to porridge at this time.
  7. Add the ground cinnamon (if you didn’t use the cinnamon stick), nutmeg, and vanilla extract and stir. Open the can of sweetened condensed milk and pour to sweeten the porridge to your taste.
  8. Optional: Add the 1/2 cup (or less) of brown sugar or granulated sugar, if it is not sweet enough for you.
  9. Discard the cinnamon stick. Remove from heat to cool for a few minutes.
  10. Serve warm and enjoy.
