Sweet Potato Pie

Sweet Potato Pie

Sweet Potato Pie is an easy homemade pie with just the right amount of spice to make it flavorful on a beautiful homemade graham crackers crust.

I am not a fan of the Pumpkin Pie that I have tasted since I came here to live.

I guess it’s because I am not used to that texture and flavor.

You see, back home we have something called Potato Pudding.

Now our potatoes are not orange as the ones here.

They are white in color, but they are sweet also.

Pin for later.

With that been said, I had to do some testing with the American sweet potatoes.

So last year I constructed a recipe and baked one.

Seriously, I am not saying this because it was done by me, but it was amazing and delicious.

My family was asking for more.

Therefore, I decided to add the recipe to my blog and share it with you guys.

Making the Graham Cracker crust

For this Sweet Potato Pie, I made a Graham Cracker crust.

It is the same one I used for my Blueberry Cheesecake and Mini Cheesecake.

You can choose to use a store bought unbaked pie crust, it’s your choice.

I used Graham Crackers, melted butter and cinnamon.

There was no need for me to add any sugar to the crust.

I think the Graham Crackers are already sweet, so I didn’t think it needed to be any sweeter.

Use the bottom of a drinking glass or a measuring cup, to spread the crust evenly and tight.

Spread the crust up on the sides too. I bake the crust for about 7 to 10 minutes, so the crust hold together.

Make sure it doesn’t get burnt.

If it is get brown too quick, cover with aluminum foil paper.

If you choose to not make your own crust, that’s okay.

You can use a store bought 9 inch pie crust.

The homemade may take a bit more time, but it is so worth it in the end.

How to prepare the potatoes for the Sweet Potato Pie?

Firstly, peel each potatoes and wash them off. Cut each potatoes into small pieces. Fill a medium sauce pan with water and cover with a lid.

Let the water comes to a boil. Add the potatoes in the boiling water and allow them to cook for about 30 minutes or until they are soft.

Secondly, discard the hot water and allow the potatoes to cool down. Mashed the potatoes with a mixer or a fork, until it is smooth. If you use a mixer, most of the string will be on the mixer attachment.

Lastly, set aside for later or once it is cool, cover and place it in the refrigerator.

How to make a Sweet Potato Pie?

Make your Graham Cracker crust, bake it and set it aside to cool while making the filling.

Cook the sweet potatoes and mash them while it’s still hot in a medium bowl. Then allow to cool at room temperature. Set aside for later.

In a large bowl, beat the sugar and butter. Add the lightly beaten eggs, vanilla extract, evaporated milk.

Bake for 15 minutes at 425 degrees F. Reduce to 350 degrees F and then continue to bake for about 40 to 45 minutes.

Add the cooked and mashed potatoes and all the spices. Mix well. Pour into the prepared graham cracker pie crust.

Let it cool and enjoy.

Can I freeze this Sweet Potato Pie?

Yes you can freeze this Sweet Potato Pie for up to 3 months in the freezer.

Wrap tightly with plastic wrap and store in a freezer bag.

When you are ready to use it, let it thaw overnight in the refrigerator.

Let it come to room temperature before serving.

Also, the best time to eat this pie in my opinion is the next day when all the flavors come together.

Cover the pie tightly and store in the refrigerator.

Notes:

  • You can use a store bought 9 inch pie crust instead of making your own crust.
  • Watch the crust while it bakes, so it doesn’t burn because it will have to go back in the oven again with the filling. If it is getting brown too fast, cover with aluminum foil wrap.
